Is it better to Cook Burgers Frozen or Thawed?

Well, the decision is totally upon you as you can grill the frozen hamburgers without thawing. Even USDA has no concerns over cooking frozen burgers without thawing.

I have done this both ways, and to be honest, there is not much evident difference other than the fact that it takes a little more time when you grill frozen burgers than the thawed ones.

Having said that, if you have the cushion of time, I would approve the thawing before cooking as it tremendously helps you cut down the time you allow burgers on the grills. Considering the additional time they take on the grill, I see there is no wrong in thawing a bit; but, there is no need for a complete thaw.

How long to cook frozen burgers? If you ask this question from me, I would say it takes about 50% more of the time than the usual grilling frozen hamburger patties process.

If you take time out of the equation, the thawed burgers are always juicier and provide even cooking. So, as I said you could decide which method suits you the best.

How to Cook Frozen Hamburgers on the Grill – Step By Step Guide

Guys, I assume you have worked with different grills such as smokeless indoor grills, gas grills, and flat top grills before and know that most of the stuff that you cook has the tendency to stick on the grill.

It’s the same with burgers; keeping that in mind, let me introduce the process of cooking frozen hamburgers on the grill.

Step # 1 – Preheating the Grill

Before you do anything, make sure your grill is perfectly clean and free of food residue. Otherwise, you are bound to face food sticking with the grill. In addition, it will change the true taste of your hamburgers as well.

Moreover, preheating is a must to prevent burgers from sticking on the grill. Normally, I preheat my grill up to 350° for around 10 minutes. If you don’t have the luxury on the grill you use to see these numbers, you can always use your hand to get a rough indication about the heat.

Let me explain this a wee bit. Move your hand over the grill keeping a distance of around 7 to 8 inches. If you had to move your hand away in less than 6 seconds, it says your grill is at 350° or above; simple as that.

Guys, these are my very own tricks, and I highly recommend you to use a thermometer instead to prevent injuries if you are uncomfortable with executing this manual method to test the temperature on the grill.

Step # 2- Preparing the Patties

The second step you have to do is preparing the burger patties. If you haven’t thaw the burgers before you cook, you will have to separate the patties apart by using some kind of a utensil. Then, it’s time for the seasoning.

You can season the patties with salt and pepper and whatever seasoning you like. Make sure you do the same thing for both sides of the patty. Now they are ready for you to cook.

Step # 3 – Cooking on the Grill

Now, place the patties on the grill once it is at the right temperature (350°). You must flip the patties every now and then. I can’t mention an exact time interval for this as it purely depends on the thickness of the patty you deal with.

However, it should happen every three to five minutes to provide even heat on both sides.

After the first round of flip, I usually add BBQ sauce to the patties to give them an additional flavor and moisture. Another important thing is that you should never allow flare-ups on the burgers; if not, the end product would have a bad scorched taste.

The internal temperature of the patties has to be 160° before you serve. However, measuring the temperature while the patties are on the grill might not work here. So, I recommend you remove them from the grill temporarily when you want to check the internal temperature to get an accurate reading.

Tossing the burger buns is more or less delicate work, and just a gentle toast is all you want to provide on them. Once you complete that process, you are good to go with your hamburgers. That is how to BBQ frozen burgers, and from my point of view, this is the best way to cook frozen burgers.

Grill Temperature for Frozen Burgers

As I mentioned previously, it is a must to preheat the grill up to 350° for 10 minutes before you place the frozen burgers on it. If you want to know how to grill frozen burgers on charcoal grills, you can use the hand method I explained to determine the temperature levels, given you don’t have a thermometer for the job.

Whether you grill burgers frozen or thawed, it is imperative to keep a close eye on the temperature; allowing the excessive temperature on patties or buns would vanish your efforts in an instant.

Well, the size of the patty kind of decides the grilling time. If you have thicker patties, obviously, the time will get increased. Generally, it should not take more than 20 minutes at said temperature levels.

Moreover, flipping also has to happen every four to five minutes to get even grilling. Guys, the internal temperature of 160° is the easiest indication that the burgers are appropriately done.

However, you got to have a meat thermometer for this. As a BBQ lover, I want my readers to have this equipment in their armory to perform tasks to get the best results.

The lifespan of burgers decides on how you store them. In addition, it’s more to do with the lifetime of frozen ground meat. Some of these meat types include beef, pork, turkey, and chicken.

I would say it’s the same answer. It should remain edible for up to four months in the freezer. Further, defrosting is not mandatory for frozen burgers. However, the decision is always yours, and I would suggest allowing the burgers in the fridge overnight is the best way to defrost them.

If you do so, you can expect a lifetime of three days before they go bad to eat. I have seen people consume frozen burgers that have been there in the freezers for nearly one year. But, that is out of my scope to approve, and I cannot recommend something that I never tested before.

Do You Have To Defrost Burgers Before Grilling?

There is nothing to worry about cooking frozen burgers without defrosting or thawing if you are concerned about safety. However, let me remind you that it will take twice the time as you would do in usual circumstances.
